Summary

Rising cancer cases are likely to increase demand for radiotherapy services in New Zealand

As of 2021, there are 21 public health boards, 77 private hospitals, and 170 diagnostic imaging centers in New Zealand. The country’s healthcare system is excellent with regards to affordability, access to medical professionals, and emergency treatment facilities. However, long waiting times are seen as a major concern, with patients experiencing delays in non-emergency treatments such as elective surgery and cancer treatments. Deferrals for cancer diagnosis could vary between 4-8 months, with lung cancer, lymphoma, and breast cancer having the highest delays. A shortage of staffing within the oncology services, with less than 70 oncologists across the country has also contributed to the late diagnosis of cancer.

It is estimated that over 10,000 cancer-related mortalities are recorded each year in New Zealand. To counter the disease burden, the New Zealand Cancer Action Plan 2019-2029 was introduced aiming at improving cancer survival rates with better diagnostic and treatment equipment and increasing the workforce to enable access to cancer care in time.

According to EMeRG’s new HospeTrack Hospital Intelligence for New Zealand, significant market opportunities exist in the tertiary care sector and diagnostic imaging centers. As per the 2017–2021 National Radiation Oncology Plan, New Zealand will need 5-6 additional linear accelerators by 2023 to match the rising demand for radiotherapy services. The demand could increase to a need for 11 linear accelerators in case the incidence rate crosses 40%.

As per the dataset, there are over 90 mammography machines across the country. The national screening service, Breastscreen Aotearoa has been aiding in the widespread diagnosis of cancer and increased awareness. However, breast cancer remains the second most common cancer across the country. It is estimated that New Zealand women have an 11-12% risk of developing breast cancer within their lifetime. For women with high breast density, the risk increases to 15 to 20%. Consequently, the demand for diagnostic and radiation therapy services is expected to increase in the coming few years, indicating market opportunities for PET scanners, SPECT scanners, gamma cameras, linear accelerators, and mammography machines.

The report provides account-level directional detail on total beds, ICU beds, ORs, ventilators, incubators, and other medical equipment installed in New Zealand as well as Anesthesia Machines, Dialysis machines, C-Arms, Cath Labs, PET, SPECT, CT, MRI scanners, Ultrasound, and X-Ray machines, Mammography machines, DEXA, LINAC, PACS and EMR making it a noteworthy source of hospital-level intelligence for New Zealand’s medical equipment installed base.

The report is a skillfully designed dataset that is an invaluable resource for any organization in the process of optimizing sales targets, estimating market potential, or developing an account management strategy in New Zealand. It provides a graphical overview of the country’s health infrastructure, as well as an account-level view of resources, directional information on the medical device installed base, hospital demographics, and care services.
